Making sure your golf cart is ready for spring can be a simple series of tasks that will not only extend the life of your golf cart, but will also add to its value and your pride of ownership.  We have broken it down to a list of 15 key golf cart maintenance tips you should do each spring.

  1. Clean Your Golf Cart

Even if you washed your golf cart immediately prior to tucking it away for the winter, it is still a great idea to give it another wash when you get it out.  Why?  Because it will allow you the opportunity to get face to face again with your cart and identify any obvious items that need addressing for the upcoming season.  Besides, it always feels better to ride a clean cart!

  1. Clean the Batteries

Get right into your battery compartment and check out your battery.  Make sure that the terminals are clean are free of corrosion.  If you happen to find some corrosion, take a bit of baking soda and give the terminals a quick scrub.  A poor electrical connection can be a cause of several headaches that can be promptly corrected with a good connection.

  1. Check the Battery Cables

Same thing as noted above, a good battery-cable connection is key to the operation of your golf cart.  Make sure that they cable are tight.  It also isn’t a bad thing to take them off and even if you haven’t found any corrosion, to give them a quick scrub with a wire brush or fine sandpaper.

  1. Check Your Battery Water Levels

Are you getting the feeling that your battery is a key element in your golf cart’s spring maintenance checklist yet?!?  If your battery is one that requires maintenance by way of proper water levels, please open the battery caps and check the water level.  If the level is low, top up according to the battery’s manufacturer specifications, with distilled water only, prior to ever moving onto the next item on the Performance Carts & Trailers Golf Cart Spring Maintenance Checklist.

  1. Charge Your Batteries

Ideally, you would have had a battery tender/trickle charger on your battery throughout the winter/off-season months as lead-acid batteries NEED to be stored charged.  If you happen to have stored your batteries for an extended period of time without charging them, you could cause irreputable harm to them, significantly reducing their life, or to the point of not being able to take a charge at all.

  1. Check Your Tire Pressure

Please ensure that all tires have been inspected for obvious signs of repair/replacement (cracks, punctures, lack of tread, even wear, etc.).  Upon finding everything to be okay with your tires, make sure to inflate each tire to appropriate level of pressure.

  1. Lube/Check Fluids

Your owner’s manual will make reference to any specific lubrication points as well as fluids (differential, oil, etc.) that will require your attention.  Make sure that all of these points have the appropriate amount of lubrication.  Also take a moment to check around these points for signs of lubrication loss.  If you have any questions about what is normal in regards to this, please do not hesitate to contact Performance Carts & Trailers.

  1. Check Your Brakes

Of course, the entire goal of getting your golf cart ready for spring is to get it rolling again, but maybe even more importantly, is making sure that you can stop it when needed!  Checking your brakes should include: making sure that there is an appropriate amount of free-play in the pedal; safely jacking up & supporting the rear of your golf cart and removing the wheels so as to properly inspect your brakes.  Taking an air compressor and blowing out the brake dust should allow you better visibility to identify potential leaks, corrosion damage as well as the thickness of your brake pads.

  1. Tighten All Bolts/Fasteners

Take a moment to thoroughly go over your golf cart and wherever you see a bolt, nut or other fastener type, make sure that they are secure.  Be mindful that most fasteners are secured to an exact torque, so proactively tightening each fastener is not recommended.  Simply make sure that all fasteners are secure.  If you have questions, please refer to your owner’s manual or contact Performance Carts & Trailers.

  1. Check Your Steering

Make sure that your steering mechanism does not have too much play in it.  Steering systems are designed to have some play, but not too sloppy.  Double check that any lubrication points have been dealt with accordingly.  Again, if you have questions, speak to a professional or the OEM.

  1. Check Your Lighting

Front lights, rear lights and even your cabin lights should all be tested.  This is a good time to inspect that all of your reflectors are in place and not in need of replacement.  Make sure that ALL lights are working and enlist the help of a friend or family member if need be.

  1. Clear out Old Score Cards and Pencils

Of course, this tip on how to get your golf cart ready for spring is based solely on the fact that you use it for golfing.  With that being said, if you expect your golf game to be slightly worse than last year, you may want to get rid of those old scorecards that are kicking around since you probably don’t want to be reminded that last year’s rounds were better than this year’s!

  1. Insurance Slip

Where/when applicable, make sure that you are carrying your latest up-to-date insurance slip. It’s just common sense, but it is one of those things that can easily slip the mind if you aren’t running your golf cart 12 months of the year.

  1. Golf Cart Accessories

Undoubtedly during the previous season, you would have thought about various accessories that would have either been nice to have (you may have been on Sant’s naughty list so you didn’t get that new rear seat, golf GPS, golf cart body kit or other accessory you were hoping for at Christmas!) or may have been a need-to-have accessory.  Either way, spring is the best time to get the best selection of accessories for your golf cart; and nothing is better than showing up for that first tee-off in the spring with some new accessories to show off to your buddies!
